Reality of Wrestler’s Protest
President of wrestling federation of India Brij bhushan Sharan Singh, who
is also Bjp's M.P in U.P, has recently been accused of sexual harassment and
molestation by 7 female wrestlers (including 1 minor). A protest led by Vinesh
Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik started in April 2023. On 28th
April Supreme Court ordered to register an FIR against Brij bhushan Sharan Singh.
Wrestlers said that they won’t stop protesting until they get full justice.
Many people ask, “If it all happened years ago, why are they protesting now?
“ And many say that they are just doing it so that they don’t have to give
trials.
Now let me remind you all of ‘Me-too’ moment, how it suddenly started in
U.S.A and got spread in whole world. Now some people think that complaining about
sexual harassment is so easy, but it’s not. In reality, there is career risk, also
there are social stigmas, long court trials and some family says, “Keep quiet
and ignore it”, some says, “What about our family reputation” and some says, “How
will you get married?”
Vinesh Phogat said in an interview, “The society we come from, we have fought so hard to get here and to say such things here, I feel it doesn’t suit us. What will our family think?”
Now let’s come to the latter question, Sakshi Malik said in an interview, “They
are repeatedly alleging that we want to play in Olympics directly, it’s not
true. I have played all small tournaments, you can see my records and
certificates. They are just trying to divert attention from the main issue.”
Sakshi told that those who tried to raise their voice got their names cancelled from competition and they still can’t wrestle on national level. Supreme Court ordered to keep the names of victim confidential.
Paramjit Malik (physiotherapist) said on national T.V that in 2014 how
wrestlers came to him crying and complaining about Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Wrestlers were forced to thank the President and Wrestling federation. They
even demanded their wedding cards forcefully.
At this time, opposition parties are openly supporting the protest. Now some people say that why there is politics on this topic, when there were farmer protests even then people used to say, “Why politics in this?”
Well, if politics will not be on important issues, then will it be only on
Hindu-Muslim issues. Politics is there for public issues, so it should be on
public issues instead of inflammatory issues.
According to article in TOI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is a powerful
politician in U.P who has more than 40 cases filed against him. If government
removes him from his position, then in 2024 elections, The BJP government may
have a hard time winning votes in his area. Perhaps, this is the reason why PM
MODI is so quiet about this issue.
